Oh Cellulite! Those annoying dimples and bumps that we most commonly see on us women’s upper things. Oh, how frustrating it is!
It is also a virtually unavoidable factor of life. Collagen fibers – the primary structural protein found in connective tissue – when stretched and torn they bind fat to the skin, causing fat cells to enlarge!
Find out more about the cellulite in your body and particularly ways you can reduce those annoying dimples to make them less noticeable!
- What is cellulite?
Cellulite is not fat, so do not get the two confused. Cellulite is evident as the dimples and bumps that occur due to tiny pockets in the skin that fat is divided into.
- Who more commonly develops cellulite?
Cellulite is more common in Women than Men. I know, it’s very unfair! The collagen in women’s skin is organized like pillars, in parallel rows. Men’s collagen is instead in an X-pattern, which creates smaller fat deposits, which does not enable dimpling of the skin. The pillar-like pattern leads to compartmentalization of fat – accumulation of fat in pockets – causing the cellulite to be visible!
- What can help cellulite?
Research has shown that over the counter (OCT) creams for cellulite can help reduce its effects. Its not going to actually get rid of it, but it can help! Look out for OTC creams that contain caffeine or retinol. Caffeine works to improve blood flow plus can temporarily shrink fat cells. Over time retinol will help repair damaged cells. In combination, retinol and caffeine based creams can be a savior. Apply a retinol based cream first followed by a caffeine based one.
- Is there a cure?
Yes! There is fortunately a cure. They are costly though. Products such as Cellulaze have been FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved to eliminate cellulite. However, depending on the size of the area you need to treat this product can set you back hundreds to thousands of dollars! The experts say this process is very effective and after only an hour the effects can last for years. That sounds worth it right?
- What can I do to help the appearance of cellulite? There are a few ways you can reduce the appearance of cellulite. Its called exercise! Exercises such as foam rolling and interval training have been shown to help. Foam rolling helps to break down the fat deposits where as interval training aids in burning fat, both making cellulite less noticeable.
- Can loosing weight help cellulite to disappear? Losing weight won’t necessarily make your cellulite magically disappear. Having an increased percentage of body fat will make cellulite more noticeable. Slimming down wont necessarily get rid of your cellulite as the skin is already stretched and damaged. The amount of cellulite you have can be a result of a variety of factors such as hormonal imbalances, genes and inflammation. So, although not the news you want to hear, dropping the kg’s wont mean you can completely eliminate cellulite. But, remember as we have spoken about, there are ways to reduce it!
- What worsens cellulite?
UV rays! These rays not only impact your skin resulting in sunburn and quite possibly skin cancer risk but also the appearance of cellulite. UV rays damage the collagen in your skin increasing your cellulite’s visibility. So, this is another reason to slip, slop, slap and look after your skin. Ensure you are using sunscreen with a high SPF of 30 – 50 + when out in the sun or even, just spending time outdoors.
